AIR 1.0 (the underlying engine for Bee) was released today, so I upgraded AIR from the previous beta and there was also a newer version of Bee. Now I’m all up to date…let’s see if the timing problems have been solved or if this will still post on GMT (6 hours from now!) or it will post at my local time (10:45am).
Antigravity is hosting Alternative Media Expo ’08 this coming Saturday at the CAC. I missed this event last year. Really hope I can make it this time round.

New Orleans had its first BarCamp this weekend. I didn’t find out about it till Friday evening, so it was a bit of a scramble to get there, but it was worth it. Great bunch of folks and it seemed like the might be just the beginning of something bigger.
If you don’t know what BarCamp is, read more here.
Here’s the Flickr pool for this weekend’s event. It sounded like we may try to get together again in mid-May around Bayou Boogaloo. Watch the Wiki for more info!
So, with the Discovery Channel Cycling team now defunct, who is an American cycling fan to support? Don’t get me wrong. I’m definitely not jingoistic about this. I don’t need an American team to root for, just somebody to get behind and root for. I think the new Team Astana is exciting, but they’ve got a huge image problem to get over. The new Team High Road (formerly T-Mobile Cycling) also seems interesting, but their name is kinda stupid, don’t you think? (and of course that’s important, right!)
The other team that has all the buzz right now is Team Slipstream though they’re still not on the Pro Tour, so that limits them somewhat. they’ve got the invite for the Tour de France though, so maybe they can really show themselves this year. I think this is the year David Zabriskie makes a name as more than just a time trial specialist.
Anyway, the reason for this rumination now is that Tour of California starts this weekend. While looking around at team sites, I also saw that Slipstream had a jersey design contest in the fall (wish I’d known about it then!). The top 5 entries are here. i don’t know which one won yet…haven’t done the leg-work to figure it out and the Slipstream site is a bit out of date. I guess I’ll see when California starts. But this design I thought should have been given some consideration. Even if the team doesn’t wear it, they should produce them for fans. That’s some funny stuff:
Last fall, I co-curated an exhibition at the Tulane Art Department’s Carroll Gallery with Derek Toten. Derek just posted on his blog about it. He’s great about documenting things, so I’m giogn to piggy-back on him here. Good to have a record of things….especially the good things…
Check out Derek’s post about the show here. Derek’s raw Flickr feed is linked over in the blogroll too.
Reading PingMag Make…it’s the sister site to PingMag, a Japanese pop-culture magazine. The “Make” version…a dubious name and mission considering Make magazine here in the States… describes themselves this way:
We use an interview format to put the spotlight on a wide range of people active in rural areas. We document the voices of these unknown heroes and broadcast them to the world. It’s the Japan-based magazine about people and making things, coming out once a week. We’re passing on the passion, ideas, skills, and life stories of people who are building today and exploring tomorrow: craftsmen, engineers, entrepreneurs, and inventors.
This article on “Dr. Mold” is pretty interesting. The pictures are really beautiful…in that odd sort of living-thing-that-eats-your-house sort of way. Could have definitely used some of his product post-K…
Though I like a good cup of coffee…and usually have at least one a day, I am a tea drinker at heart. For years, I only drank tea. I blame my return to coffee on my dog-walking days in NYC in the mid-90s when Starbucks was just infiltrating the world. These days, living in New Orleans (a coffee town, no doubt), I miss the tea shops of NYC, and I usually have to order my tea online.
Anyway, I thought this was a great design idea (doesn’t seem to be on the market just yet): The tpod “becomes a little boat. then put it into the cup with hot water and let it swim around until the tea is ready.” Elegant interactivity…
